In the Great Thar Desert

Jaisalmer

Jaisalmer is picturesque and truly a gem in the desert. Isolated, it's an oasis in the Great Thar Desert, with its giant sandcastle like fort. It is also the base for many an adventurous trek into the ocean of sand.

The old fort in the centre of town is majestic against the desert backdrop and at sunset, fairy tale like. A walk through this golden hued, sandstone citadel reveals a surprise at every corner. The town is lovely to explore as well should you find your way out of the fort.

Jaisalmer Fort

The fort was built in 1156 by the Rajput ruler Jaisala who also constructed 99 bastions on the walls of the fort's circumference. Now the fort houses 25% of the old city's population with narrow paved streets, shops, temples and more.

Hidden Treasures

Meandering the paved allyways is an unending discovery of hidden treasures. From intricately carved Jain temples (as pictured above) to quaint havelis (private mansions, a term derived from the Persian "an enclosed space") and a plethora of shops filled with knick-knacks for every traveler.
