Madurai
This animated city is bustling with street vendors, unending rows of tailor shops, meandering cows on the streets and a bastion of rickshaw drivers. One of south India’s oldest cities, Madurai was built around the spectacularly massive Meenakshi temple, a crown example of Dravidian architecture.
On the way to Madurai we stop in the town of Thanjavur and visit the spectacular Brihadeeswar temple.
This Chola style temple was constructed by King Raja Raja Chola I exactly a 1,000 years ago.
The temple boasts a 13-storey tower with an 80-tonne monolithic dome above it.
