Overlooking the Bay of Bengal, Mamallapuram is known for its sun, sand and ancient rock carvings. The village here is listed as a World Heritage site and is still renowned for its stone carvings.

The path leads to the resort's restaurant located on the beach under an umbrella of coconut frawns. On the far left of the photo you can see the Shore Temple. Fisherman bringing in their catch with the Shore Temple in the background. An upclose look at the Shore Temple, weathered by the wind and the sea, was constructed in the middle of the 7th century. This huge relief carving (about 30m by 12m) called Arjuna's Penance is one of the highlights of Mamallapuram. More shrines and carvings scattered throughout this small hill. A stone carver working away at a big rock, slowly but surely turning it into a piece of art. A finish product. This is the face of the Monkey God, Hanuman. Colourful vegetables fill the local market Flower garlands for sale hang from a local stall. Dancing in the street does not only happen in Bollywood movies. |
